Berlin -  Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) announced far-reaching changes on the topic of border controls in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon (June 10)   . 

As the Seehofer explained, normal operation will resume on the German national borders from next Tuesday (June 16). Seehofer * had informed the federal cabinet of the planned changes before the press conference.

In detail, this means that EU citizens and Swiss nationals can enter again unhindered, i.e. without controls and without quarantine regulations, from June 16, according to the federal government's decision - with a few exceptions. For example, controls for foreigners arriving by plane from Spain will not end until June 21. Also Spain can only then - in the first eight days limited to a few holiday islands - the first tourists into the country.

In almost all federal states , however, there is an obligation to quarantine entries from EU countries that have a number of newly infected people with more than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - cumulative in the last seven days. This has been the case in Sweden since last week. The only exceptions are Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia.

In mid-March, Seehofer had imposed strict entry restrictions on the corona virus in Germany and ordered controls at the land borders with France , Switzerland , Luxembourg , Denmark and Austria . Travelers who came by plane from Italy and Spain were also checked. Due to the Corona * crisis, EU foreigners were only allowed to enter the country if they worked in Germany or were able to provide another valid reason.

At the same time, the Federal Government announced on Wednesday that the travel warning for tourists due to the corona pandemic will be extended to August 31 for more than 160 countries outside the European Union. Special regulations are possible in individual cases. 

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas * said in this context that the extended travel warning for countries outside the European Union will be quickly adapted to changing conditions. "That is why we will keep checking travel warnings again and again before September, always with the safety of travelers as a key criterion," said Maas
