The cruise missiles used in attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure and an international airport last year were "of Iranian origin , " UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council in a report that Reuters consulted Thursday. He said that several items obtained by the United States during the seizure of arms and equipment in November 2019 and in February 2020 were also "of Iranian origin" .

Guterres, who reports twice a year to the Security Council on compliance with the Iranian arms embargo and other restrictions following the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, said the UN examined debris from weapons used in the attacks on Aramco's oil infrastructure in May and September 2019 and against Abha International Airport in June. Some items have manufacturing features similar to those produced by a commercial entity in Iran, and several were delivered to the country between February 2016 and April 2018, added Guterres, noting that there may have been non-compliance with the resolutions adopted in 2015 by the Security Council.

No comments were immediately obtained from the Iranian diplomatic mission to the United Nations.

Washington is pushing for the fifteen members of the Security Council to extend the arms embargo targeting Tehran, which expires in October, a measure to which Russia and China - who veto the Council - have already expressed their opposition.
