Special envoy to Rügen
It is only 9:30 am, Monday June 9, and tourists are already crowding on the pontoon of Baabe, east of the island of Rügen. Leaving a quarter of an hour earlier from the neighboring port of Sellin, a boat from the White Fleet approaches its stopover, to embark and then reach the open sea: the objective is to go and see the seals in the company of a young biologist specializing in these marine mammals. It is one of the most popular attractions on the Baltic coast and in the Mecklenburg-Pomerania region.
Having not reserved their tickets, a group of around twenty people are quickly picked up cold. "The captain has just informed me that, for health reasons, only tourists who have ordered their seats will be able to board," warns the biologist. Disappointment in the small group, the unlucky ones are about to turn back. Only a small handful of them continue to wait for a happy stroke of luck: they will be rewarded.
