Border controls will be " officially lifted on June 15 at midnight, " a spokesman for the German Interior Ministry told AFP, adding that the lifting would be effective " overnight from Monday to Tuesday ." The government of Angela Merkel removes in particular " the obligation to have a valid reason to enter " in the country, added this spokesman.
Germany had established border controls with some of its neighbors in mid-March to contain the spread of the virus. Only frontier workers or food transport workers were allowed to pass, but private visits were prohibited. It will thus reopen a day later than its European neighbors, notably France, who plan to reopen their borders overnight Sunday to Monday.
