Vrutky (dpa) - A young man armed with a knife killed a teacher in a Slovak school and injured four other people. Police chief Milan Lucansky said that the attacker was shot dead by police officers on Thursday after the attack.

According to Lucansky's information on the Slovak police's official Facebook page, the perpetrator was a 22-year-old former student of the elementary and high school community school in the small town of Vrutky near the Czech border.

The perpetrator, who comes from the neighboring town of Martin, entered the school building in the morning and initially damaged parts of the facility. When the deputy headmaster got in his way, he killed him with several knife stabs. He then stormed into a school class and injured a teacher and two children, as well as the school attendant who tried to hold him down. The teacher and one of the children were "in very serious condition" on Friday, as a hospital spokeswoman told TV news channel TA3.

The police, who were alerted by an emergency call, could only stop the attacker fleeing the school building with several shots. Bouncing police shots injured two police officers. About two hundred meters from the school, the persecution ended with the attacker's death. A team of doctors and psychologists looked after several people at the school who were traumatized by the events. In the evening hundreds of people grieved in front of the school building and lit candles. Classes were canceled for Friday.

The motive for the crime was guesswork. The mayor of Vrutky contradicted suspicions of an act of revenge in an interview with journalists. The perpetrator was unremarkable and unproblematic as a student, the school management also confirmed that.
