The epidemic is spreading in Ukraine and public figures are not spared. Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska announced on Friday that she had tested positive for coronavirus, following the announcement of a record number of new cases of Covid-19 in Ukraine, against a background of deconfinement.
"Today I received a positive test," she wrote on her Facebook page, adding that her husband, President Volodymyr Zelensky, and their two children had been tested negative. She says she feels "good" and is being cared for at home while isolating herself from her family.
President Zelensky singled out
Olena Zelenska, 42, like her husband, called on the Ukrainians to remain vigilant and to wear a protective mask in public spaces, assuring that her family "continued to comply with all prevention rules".
President Zelensky is however criticized for frequently not wearing a mask himself during his public appearances. In early June, the head of state and several members of his team notably had coffee inside a restaurant in western Ukraine when the government only authorized the use of terraces.

Ukraine recorded a record 689 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, "a very alarming figure" according to the Minister of Health, who blamed massive violations of pandemic prevention rules (social distancing, wearing the mask, etc.). Volodymyr Zelensky himself stressed on Friday the importance of the wearing of the mask by his fellow citizens.
