US President Donald Trump is not disturbed by the rising corona numbers in the United States. Researchers want to find out which measure has achieved a lot in New York.

  • There are now more than two million people infected in the United States (see June 12 update, 3:46 p.m.).
  • Now researchers from the USA want to find out which measure prevented tens of thousands of infections in New York alone (see update from June 13, 1:45 p.m.).
  • Here you will find the basic facts about the corona virus * and the corona news from Germany. We also offer you the current number of cases in Germany on a map. The following recommendations for corona protection measures are currently available. You can read about all previous developments in the US corona crisis here.

Updated on 13 June, 13:20:  Wearing masks should in New York thousands corona Infektione n have prevented. This is the finding that researchers from universities in Texas and California came up with in a new study. According to the researchers' calculations, the measure prevented more than 66,000 infections in New York alone between April 17 and May 9 . The result was published in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences”. Accordingly, the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen is mainly transmitted through the air.

New Corona study from the USA: Do protective masks prevent tens of thousands of infections?

In addition to New York, the study also looked at Italy, where the wearing of masks is said to have prevented more than 78,000 infections between April 6 and May 9. To this end, the researchers examined data and statistics from Wuhan, China, where the virus initially broke out, as well as from Italy and the metropolis of New York. In Italy and New York, the wearing of masks was arranged according to other recommendations, such as washing hands or keeping a distance - in the particularly hard-hit north of Italy on April 6, in New York on April 17. In Wuhan, on the other hand, all of these rules were ordered simultaneously. The researchers now compared the data before and after the mask rule in New York and Italy with that in Wuhan.

From their numbers, the team led by Renyi Zhang from A&M University in College Station concludes that the transmission of viruses through the air emerges as the dominant route of infection. Measures such as keeping a distance and quarantine alone could therefore not stop the spread of corona. "The difference between mandatory and non-mandatory mouthguards is the determining factor in shaping the course of the global pandemic," they write.

Update of June 12, 8:30 p.m .: In the face of ongoing coronavirus infections , the US health authority CDC has called on all residents of the USA to continue to take the situation seriously. The pandemic is not over yet, Jay Butler, the CDC's infectious disease officer, said on Friday at a press conference call.

New strict exit restrictions "could become necessary again". This has to be decided at the local level depending on the infection process.

However, this declaration is not simply accepted on all sides, although Donald Trump also chose the approach and communicated it officially. The United States carries out more tests than any other country in the world - that's why most infected people are covered here , he emphasized.

But the explanation is controversial . The United States may have the highest total number of tests, but not in relation to the population. A closer look is made per capita in other countries.

Trump's rally takes place on June 19, a day commemorating the end of slavery. In 1921, Tulsa was the scene of a gruesome massacre by a mob angry white people. Historians consider this the worst clash between whites and blacks in the United States after the end of the American Civil War. Hundreds of people died.

Corona in the USA: The only country with loosening despite a high infection rate

Update of June 11, 10:24 p.m .: With more than two million Corona people infected, the United States is by far the most affected by the pandemic. The number of deaths could rise to 200,000 by September . At least that's what Dr. Ashish Jha , director of the  Harvard Global Health Institute told CNN, businessinsider reports.

This is not a worst-case scenario, says Jha. The sad mark of 200,000 deaths can also be exceeded, even if you have no other cases and you can keep the curve flat. The Harvard researcher also warns: “This is only until September. The pandemic will not be over in September. ”

Jha also gives a reason for his bleak scenario: The United States is the only large country that has already relaxed the corona restrictions before the infection rate has been brought under control. With this, the researcher also indirectly accuses US President Donald Trump, who clearly advocated quick easing.

But Jha is even clearer in his criticism: The United States is the only "developed country" that does not have an effective contact tracking system. He urged citizens to "pressure" the government to do more testing and better contact tracking in the pandemic.
