Protesters also responded in other cities, such as Leipzig and Hamburg, to the call by the progressive Unteilbar (Indivisible) movement for nationwide protest actions.

The Greens' deputy for the popular district of Kreuzberg, Canan Bayrama, said on Twitter that she hoped for the advent of " an anti-racist society, a society of social and climate justice ".

The human chain in the capital was to stretch from the famous Brandenburg Gate to the multiethnic district of Nuekoelln, passing through the iconic communist-era television tower on Alexanderplatz.

The organizers said 5,000 people had registered to participate in the event, while police said they had prepared for the presence of 20,000 protesters.

Last weekend, more than 10,000 people gathered in Berlin, under the banner of the Black Lives Matter movement, in reaction to the death on May 25 in Minneapolis, in the United States, of George Floyd, a black forty-year-old asphyxiated by a white policeman. The organizers of the demonstration claimed on their website that they had broader demands.

They demand in particular better working conditions, that everyone be paid, migrants included, affordable rents, the maintenance of the right of asylum and a revival of the environment-friendly economy.
