A massive explosion shakes an expressway in eastern China. Rescue workers find a fire inferno, and many are killed and injured.
Beijing (dpa) - At least 19 people were killed in the explosion of a tanker truck in eastern China. Another 172 were injured, 24 of them seriously, the authorities said.
The liquefied gas vehicle blew up on a section of the Shenyang-Haikou expressway near Wenling City in Zehjiang Province on Saturday, the Xinhua news agency reported. A second explosion occurred when the truck fell on a workshop near the street.
The explosions would have caused some houses and factories to collapse. The pictures showed cars in flames and thick clouds of smoke above the scene of the accident. Hundreds of firefighters were involved in the rescue and salvage work, it was said. The ministries for public security and civil protection had sent working groups to the scene of the accident. There was initially no information about a possible cause.
