How Record Stores Prepare for Record Store Day

2020-06-16T16:08:57.935Z

WEB-SERIES 1/6 - After two months of closure, the Figaroscope presents 6 stores that have reopened. The record stores also give us their 5 favorites before the event which celebrates the vinyl record each year. Today, Balades Sonores 1-3 avenue Trudaine (9th), run by the couple Thomas Changeur and Esther Marti.

This year, as a prelude to the Fête de la musique celebrated on June 21, is the 10th edition of the "Record Store Day". This edition is going to be a bit special due to the health crisis of the Coronavirus. Indeed, the organizers of the event decided to “break down” the festivities linked to the vinyl record into four sequences: June 20, August 29, September 26 and October 26.

For some independent record stores such as Balades sons , these upheavals represented a real challenge ... "I admit that the new breakdown of the 2020 edition of the Record Store Day was very difficult to orchestrate , says record store Thomas Changeur. When we learned that the French sale would continue on June 20, Esther and I said to ourselves that the timing was going to be very dangerous! ”

The place

Not only did we have to prepare for a physical reopening of the two stores scheduled for May 11. But it was also necessary to respond to requests from the "Record Store Day", Thomas Changeur and Esther Marti were forced to reconfigure themselves to integrate the 150 new references from the 2020 selection into their online site.

" Like other colleagues, we were taken aback ," explains the record store. It is very long and tedious to put all of these references online on our site by hand. We can say, it was very tense. But the game is worth the candle, because we are aware that the Record Store Day is an important event. It will therefore take place this year, even if it will not resemble the demonstration that we usually know, with these neck and neck in the morning. Let’s say it will avoid the bottleneck ... ”

It is clear that in the adjoining premises of Esther and Thomas, located at the start of avenue Trudaine, there is above all a warm and cozy atmosphere. From the start, you feel good there. A young cat named Pepito sometimes claws on the armchairs. There are also original drawings, posters and t-shirts of Esther, illustrator of Barcelona origin… And of course countless vinyl record trays, sometimes overlooked by this facetious tomcat

Before / after the coronavirus: what has changed?

Precisely, how did the Balades Sonores boutique experience containment? "I admit that we had to face a rather unprecedented situation," recalls Thomas Changeur. Like many physical businesses, it was quite complicated. But in our case, we are lucky to have created an online store inaugurated in October 2018. Thanks to this site, the whole community of vinyl lovers was able to stay connected. We felt very supported. Many customers have cheered us up from the start of confinement ... We launched video capsules. We have set up “mystery packs” where we sell three albums in different categories: Jazz & soul, Classic pop rock or Electronic music ... Even if we were a little embarrassed to talk about a disc, an object that remains far from 'be a good of first necessity. "

In any case, Thomas and Esther warmly thank the customers who have continued to encourage them during this troubled period. "Their expressions of gratitude, and their online purchases allowed us to weather the storm without much breakage ," explains the couple. Concretely, we have a dead loss of 1/3 third of the turnover. The absence of concerts, the cancellation of the festivals for which we make Flyers, posters and where we sell vinyls on the spot, all of this impacted us, of course. In any case, although we are still worried about the future and weakened, we remain confident today. We are exhausted but happy ... "

The 5 favorites of " Balades Sonores "

1) The disc to listen to in the selection of " Record Store Day "

It is very difficult to choose from a selection of 150 references. But this is a really interesting discovery for us: the reissue of four discs by the Japanese jazz trumpeter Terumasa Hino. This Japanese jazzman was mainly illustrated in the 70s and 80s. Between Journey to air, Love nature, Peace and love or A part , he produced an avant-garde and creative sound unique in the world. All recorded at the Upsurge Studio in New York City in March 1970.

2) The disc to listen to this summer by the pool

Already with its title "Surf ", this album calls out to take the plunge. This is Etienne Daho's new album. This is the title that works the most for pre-orders on our site. Daho's success is largely deserved. And I'm not saying that because he's a regular shop customer! " Surf " was an never finished project, started in 2004, which he continued in 2006 and finished in 2019. It is an album made of covers where we find lots of good things. It goes from the Pet Shop Boys to Billie Holiday, including Phoenix ...

3) The disc to listen to swing in the evening

It depends on the style of swing, but if it is for collapsing in big bass, I highly recommend a disc a little unusual. BOD (Best of Digital) an album which brings together the best songs of the mysterious rapper Jorrdee. This Jorrdee is a bit of an extraterrestrial. It belongs to the PNL generation. His rap is quite amazing, strange. He has never released vinyl titles. This compilation repairs this oversight.

4) The disc to listen to hover

I hear the word hover as a call to reverie and sweetness. So I'm thinking of Jay Jay Johansson's "Old Dog" album. This Swedish crooner dandy has a voice apart, a posture apart. Throughout his albums, I have the impression that he got closer to jazz. Here he pays tribute to some great soundtracks from films. This ranges from a fantastic Sinatra medley which spans 15 minutes at Stranger than paradise , Shining , or Blade Runner ...

5) The disc to listen to when you want to make a canvas

We had a lot of fun discovering this 007 box from the Studio One label which brings together compositions from the greatest themes of James Bond music ... in ska! It should be remembered that Ian Fleming lived in Jamaica, that there was a house called "Golden Eye". And that three films from the saga were filmed there, Doctor No , Live and Let Die , and The Man With The Golden Gun .
