Turkish fighter jets attacked positions of Kurdish forces in various areas of northern Iraq tonight. The Reuters news agency reported that this was a response to increasing attacks against Turkish military bases by the Kurds.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Defense, Operation "Eagle Claw" commenced an attack on caves in which the Kurdish forces are hiding. Turkey's attacks against strongholds by the PKK militia have become a common sight, both in the southern Kurdish region of Turkey and in northern Iraq. But apparently this time it is escalation.
A security source told Reuters news agency that fighter jets took off from several military airports in Turkey, including southern cities of Diarbakir and Malta.
The Ministry of Defense announced that the air campaign was being waged against the PKK in the area of its outposts in Kandil, near the Iranian border, in addition to the vicinity of Singhar, Zep and Absin. The Turks explained the operation by saying that "the PKK and other terrorists threaten our nation's security and borders with attacks that are increasing daily at bases and posts."
