The Flushing Meadows women's tournament will be contested without Simona Halep. The Romanian, number two in the world, said in an interview with Pro TV that she did not plan to replay before the end of the year outside Europe. As a result of this guideline, she will not go to New York from August 31 to September 13 to defend her chances, and no more in Asia before the end of 2020.
Simona Halep, who recently resumed training, remains on three consecutive failures in the American tournament. Uncomfortable on US cement, she bowed in the second round last year and had packed her bags as soon as she entered the lists in the two previous editions. Only a semi-final reconciled him with the New York round in 2015. The winner of the 2018 Roland-Garros therefore prefers to focus on the Paris fortnight which will take place from September 20 to October 4. Inevitably good news for the organizers of the French Open, who also fear that some players, little fond of ocher land, decline the invitation only seven days after the end of the American tournament.
Djokovic and Nadal also hesitate
Halep may not be the only star of the little yellow ball to overlook the US Open. Doubt hangs over the participation of Novak Djokovic, who fears that the sanitary measures, described as "extreme", will make the experience painful this season, in particular to organize the presence of his staff. Rafael Nadal, who absolutely wants to shine at Roland-Garros, seems to hesitate too. "If you told me to go and play the US Open today, I would tell you no ' , had he warned in early June.
