The number of new deaths linked to the coronavirus rose to 34 in Italy, against 26 the day before, announced Tuesday the civil protection agency which recorded 210 new contaminations in 24 hours against 303 Monday.

The epidemic, since it appeared on Italian territory on February 21, has claimed the lives of 34,405 people in the country, placing Italy in fourth position behind the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil in terms of death. The number of confirmed infections amounts to 237,500, which places Italy in seventh place in the world.

The region of Lombardy, in the north of the country, remains by far the most affected by the pandemic with 143 new cases among the 210 identified Tuesday in one day. The number of people registered as currently carrying the disease fell to 24,569 from 25,909 the day before.

The number of patients hospitalized in intensive care fell Tuesday to 177 against 207 the previous day, confirming a long-term downward trend. Of those initially infected, 178,526 were declared recovered from 177,010 a day earlier.

According to the civil protection agency, 2,892 million people were tested as of Tuesday, out of a population of around 60 million.
