Update, June 16, 2020, 5:45 pm: Donald Trump plans to deliver a speech across the U.S. in response to ongoing protests against racism and police violence . Trump wants to turn to his countrymen from the rose garden of the White House. There is speculation as to whether the US president will announce reforms.

The United States has not come to rest since George Floyd's death . After a weekend of protests surrounding George Floyd's death, White House officials are planning a Donald Trump speech on "Race and Unity." Trump is due to turn to the US next week, Ben Carson, minister of housing and urban development in Trump's cabinet, hinted in an interview to news channel CNN.

US President Donald Trump has condemned Floyd's death several times. However, he is accused of not clearly positioning himself against racism and not showing enough understanding for the anger about discrimination and injustice in the country. His visit to a nearby church, including the use of tear gas against demonstrators, had caused an outcry among believers and atheists alike. To de-escalate, Trump could now take a clear position in his speech.

Even Donald Trump's handling of the protests caused a stir. He described the riots as "acts of domestic terror" and appealed to all mayors and governors to "show an overwhelming police presence" "until the violence is put down".

George Floyd died in a brutal arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25. A white police officer had pressed his knee on the neck of Floyd lying on the ground for almost nine minutes - despite all requests from the 46-year-old to let him breathe. Floyd was arrested on suspicion of paying with a false $ 20 bill. Since his death, there have been major protests in the United States - and worldwide - against police violence, racism and discrimination.
