Venezuela: Chavist power beheads one of the main opposition parties

The Venezuelan Supreme Court of Justice has decided to suspend the national leadership of the Democratic Action party, and to choose its replacements.

The constitutional chamber of the Venezuelan Supreme Court of Justice surprised Monday evening by issuing a judgment which suspends the current national leadership of Democratic Action (AD), the country's oldest party founded in 1941 by Romulo Betancourt. AD is a member of the Socialist International.

This sentence follows the decision of the main Venezuelan opposition parties, including AD, not to participate in the legislative elections next December. They believe that the new National Electoral Council (CNE), appointed last week by the same Supreme Electoral Court, while this prerogative belongs to the National Assembly, does not allow the organization of elections under satisfactory democratic conditions. The CNE is responsible for organizing and supervising the elections.

The Supreme Court voluntarily appointed the new party leadership to replace Isabel Carmona de Serra, the president, and Henry Ramos Allup, the secretary general. It is the former right-hand man of Henry Ramos Allup, Bernabe Gutierrez, who becomes the new secretary general of the party. Already last week his brother, Luis, who had nevertheless shown his support for Juan Guaido, President of the National Assembly and Acting President of the country recognized by around fifty countries including France and the United States, had agreed to become a member of the new CNE.

The new party leadership appointed by the Supreme Court " may use the logo, symbols, emblems, colors and all other properties " of the AD party.

On his Twitter account, Bernabe Gutierrez ensures that, within AD, activists want to participate in the electoral process, contrary to the position expressed a few hours earlier by the four main opposition parties that make up the majority in parliament: AD, Voluntad popular, Primero Justicia and Nuevo Tiempo.

A first

" I propose a referendum so that it is the militants who decide " to participate or not in the legislative elections, explained Sunday Bernabe Guttierez. This interference by the Supreme Court of Justice in the life of an opposition party is a first in Venezuela. AD is not a party created by decree. We are the conscience of the people and the conscience does not dissolve by decree, reacted Henry Ramos Allup. The Maduro government wants to develop its plan to criminalize dissidence in Venezuela and replace it with a pseudo-opposition "supporting its authoritarian plan.

Interim President Juan Guaido reacted with a press release: " We are strongly reshuffling and condemning the sentence issued by the judicial arm of the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro who claims to deprive the leadership of Democratic Action of its legitimate authorities and entrust it to a group of 'usurpers '.
