Violent thunderstorms swept across Germany at the weekend. At the end of the extreme weather days there is a sad balance. The situation remains tense at the start of the week.

Violent thunderstorms swept across Germany at the weekend. At the end of the extreme weather days there is a sad balance. The situation remains tense at the start of the week.

  • The weather * in Germany was extreme this weekend.
  • Heavy storms * swept across the country on Saturday and at night on Sunday. Four people were injured by lightning strikes (see update from June 14, 1:33 p.m.).
  • At the start of the week, the German Weather Service (DWD) continues to warn of extreme rainfall.

Weather in Germany: “Omega high” - extreme weather conditions remain

Update June 15, 10:58 a.m .: After the heavy storms at the weekend, the weather in Germany shows no mercy in some regions: From North Rhine-Westphalia to Hesse to Bavaria * , heavy rain showers and local thunderstorms are expected on Monday.

In the south, the German Weather Service (DWD) warns of heavy rain and continuous rain - "bad weather". In southeastern Bavaria and on the edge of the Alps, up to 60 liters per square meter can fall until Tuesday morning.

In contrast, in the north and east it was summery. Here the DWD warns of increased UV radiation and recommends protective measures: “You should avoid long stays in the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Even in the shade, a sun-tight shirt, long pants, sunscreen (SPF 15+), sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat are part of the sun-friendly behavior. ”

This strange weather is triggered by a strong “ omega high ”, explains Jan Schenk from the weather.com weather portal. A stable high-pressure area has developed over Scandinavia, which extends to Spitsbergen and Northern Greenland. "There is a heat wave in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia," said meteorologist Schenk. In the north it was much too warm for the season and in the south of Europe it was too cold. “Germany is exactly in between. That is why it is nice and warm in northern Germany and a bit cooler in southern Germany, ”says the weather expert.

Around 75 missions due to heavy rain were registered there.

There were accidents due to aquaplaning on several highways . "Many drivers were simply too fast in the heavy rain," said a message from the Bielefeld motorway police. Severe weather alarm: Deep "Octavia" discharges "diagonally across Germany" - where there is still heavy rain today

Update from June 14, 2.35 p.m .: Deep " Octavia " has already caused devastation in some places last night. Due to  floods and  mudslides , the town of Grainau in Bavaria had to be evacuated (see update from June 14, 8:44 a.m.). Lightning strikes hit several people and injured them. But the  German Weather Service  (DWD) has not yet given the all-clear for today's Sunday - and not for the coming week either.

Over the course of this Sunday, the storm trough  “diagonally across Germany” should continue to discharge, weather expert Dennis Dalter told t-online . Heavy rain must therefore still be expected from the North Sea to Franconia: "Heavy showers come from Franconia, over the West Ore Mountains, Thuringia, North Hesse, Lower Saxony and up to the North Sea," said the meteorologist. There should be relaxation in northeastern Germany - there, high "Thomas" will prevail on Sunday and delight sun worshipers with warm temperatures and largely cloud-free skies.

Heavy rain with quantities of around 30 liters per square meter, locally also around 40 liters per square meter, is possible for several hours.

According to the five regional control centers for emergency calls, trees fell on streets and partly fell on cars, water ran into basements and flooded streets, lightning struck. There was also water in the elevators. A roof structure burned in Wernsdorf near Königs Wusterhausen. According to previous information, people have not been injured nationwide. There was also a muddy nearby. No one was injured, but around 200 people were affected by the evacuation, the integrated control center and the police said. Update from June 14, 8:07 a.m .:  After heavy thunderstorms in the night of Sunday, especially in Bavaria, the German Weather Service warns again on Sunday mornings of strong and sometimes heavy thunderstorms throughout Germany. The only exceptions are the west, southwest and northeast.

There is a risk of severe weather mainly due to heavy heavy rain and large hail accumulations. Later, according to the DWD, heavy rain lasting several hours is possible, as well as continuous rain all the way to the south. In its warning report, the DWD also goes into the cause of the thunderstorms: a low-pressure channel lies over Germany , in the area of which very humid, warm air that tends to thunderstorms is weather-effective.

Weather in Germany - highest DWD warning level: super cells threaten - local tornadoes possible

Update June 13, 2020, 1:38 pm: As announced, things are really starting to get going! There are currently several warnings of the highest level from the German Weather Service! They particularly affect the Baltic Sea region around Schwerin. The DWD is expecting heavy thunderstorms with "extremely heavy heavy rain and hail" in these minutes. It can also get rough around Lübeck.

Further regions with extreme weather warnings from the DWD can be found in Brandenburg, east of Berlin. There are also official severe weather warnings here. There is currently another cell between Salzgitter and Göttingen.

Severe weather on Saturday: German weather service warns of storms, heavy rain and heavy thunderstorms

Our article from June 13, 2020, 9:02 a.m .:

Munich - The weather this Saturday can be violent *! Something is brewing about Germany. The German Weather Service warns that storm-like thunderstorms can discharge in the warm, humid air from Saturday afternoon

According to the DWD , heavy thunderstorms and heavy rain with quantities of 25 to 40 liters per square meter can be expected in one hour in large parts of the country. The DWD continues: There are also local gusts of up to 100 km / h and hail with grain sizes of around 3 cm. If several thunderstorms grow together, heavy rain with quantities of around 50 l / sqm is also unlikely for several hours. Currently, this warning particularly refers to the broad center of Germany: Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Thuringia and Hesse, but also Franconia could be particularly hard hit, as could parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia. Only the southwest of the country could get away more easily.

Severe weather hazard in Germany: Super cells and local tornadoes are possible on Saturday

The forecast by meteorologist Bernd Madlener from wetter.com also sounds similarly bleak. He explains why things get so hot in Germany: A warm, humid eastern current meets the cooler air from the Atlantic. "The air has to go up, large storm clouds form," said Madlener.

Saturday starts quietly, but from noon to afternoon there will be “more and more powerful thunderstorms”. He sees the danger most in a middle of Germany up to north and south. Rotating  thunderstorm supercells could also be created - with extreme rainfall, so that cellars could also run full or storm surges could form. But that's not all:  "Maybe there is a single tornado somewhere," says Madlener. He thinks the probability is low, if a tornado should form, then probably in the north of Germany.

Weather expert Dominik Jung from the Q.met weather service also warns of local tornadoes in Germany, as does expert Thomas Sävert from unwetteragentur.de. The picture said Sävert: “On Saturday there can be widespread thunderstorms, some of which can be violent, some with heavy rain, hail and local storms. The risk of tornado increases with the thunderstorms. ”

+++ Severe weather on the weekend ⚡❗ +++
From tomorrow at the latest, things really get down to business with the weather. Flooded cellars and flooded streets threaten as well as hail and storm.

Weather in Germany: weather forecast also for Sunday

And the outlook for Sunday isn't much better. Meteorologist Udo Braun from wetter.net predicts new thunderstorms: “A band of clouds lies between the northwest and the center with storms and thunderstorms with storms and hail. In the south, showers and thunderstorms are a little less numerous. ”
