"Unjust stigma": the appeal of 32 deputies faced with police suicides

2020-06-18T20:41:36.733Z

Thirty-two parliamentarians (LREM, MoDem, Agir ensemble) call on the Interior Ministry to act, after the suicide of two officials in three days.

After the suicide of two police officers on June 9 and 11, 32 deputies flew to the aid of the police, calling for an end to the "unjust stigmatization" of which they are, according to them, victims. The suicide of a police officer no longer surprises, and becomes a dull habit. This quasi-indifference should revolt us , deplore these LREM parliamentarians, including François Jolivet (Indre), the ex-boss of RAID Jean-Michel Fauvergue (Seine-et-Marne) or even Francis Chouat (Essonne). "If racism and other forms of intolerance are to be punished, the slippage of some should not lead to distrust of all. France is not America ", argue the elected officials, in reference to the death of George Floyd, killed by a white police officer on May 25 in Minneapolis.

This call, transmitted to the media on Thursday, was signed by 32 deputies from the groups La République en Marche, Agir ensemble, and Mouvement Democrats et relatives. “In 2015, France was touched in its heart by murderous attacks. Our police and gendarmes were on the front line in the face of terrorist barbarism to save lives. That year, they were applauded for it. In 2016 in Magnanville , they were also the victims of terrorism. How can we forget the assassination of Jean-Baptiste Salvaing and Jessica Schneider at their home? ”, They recall. Before adding: “In all situations, there is always something that brings us back to the police. Let’s imagine, even for a moment, that she’s gone. ”

Security, the first good of the French

"1200 civil servants have killed themselves in 25 years, and this ultimate act increased by almost 70% in 2019. Why do those who protect us sometimes kill themselves?" , the parliamentarians are indignant. “In France, support and listening associations are asking for the implementation of support and prevention measures. These, mobilized as close as possible to their colleagues in difficulty, are already providing an initial response. We must build a new doctrine in conjunction with these actors that would take this risk into account, ” they assert.

In their manifesto, the deputies also called on the Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, to "act" against these suicides - 59 took place in 2019 in the police. "When will the Interior Ministry open this courageous and necessary debate internally, rather than entrusting this responsibility to consultants?" And to conclude: “Without security, the exercise of our own freedoms is impossible. Security is the first asset of the French. We must not forget this, by supporting the women and men who carry this burden .
