The mayor of Lomas de Zamora , Martín Insaurralde, received a plasma transfusion on Thursday as part of the treatment for covid-19.The communal chief has been in the Llavallol Municipal Hospital for a week, when it was confirmed that he was infected with coronavirus.
"The treatment is framed in the provisions of the Province of Buenos Aires for coronavirus cases that present respiratory complications and have pre-existing risk factors," the Municipality of Lomas de Zamora reported in an official statement.
Insaurralde recovered from testicular cancer in 2014, after three years of treatment that left her with kidney failure as a sequel. Also, he is asthmatic.
So far, and as long as there are no major complications, the mayor will not ask for a license and will continue to lead the Southern Commune of Greater Buenos Aires, as confirmed in his environment.
"Yesterday (this Wednesday), the Lomas de Zamora medical team detected a decrease in his lung capacity in the daily examination of Insaurralde and proceeded to activate the protocol, " the statement from the Municipality continues. And he adds that the communal chief "has had a fever and associated symptoms for a week."
"At the time of arranging the procedure, it was verified that the patient does not have peripheral venous access, as a result of the chemotherapy that he underwent in 2011," they reported.
This means that the plasma transfusion could not be performed through a line placed in the arm or hand.
“For this reason, surgeons Martín Parodi and Diego Pintos surgically placed a central line (in the chest) under ultrasound guidance. The intervention went well and Insaurralde received the plasma transfusion in the operating room recovery room and then was transferred to the room where he will continue to rest and be isolated, "they confirmed.
The plasma transfusion patients recovered from covid-19 is a treatment that was implemented in Argentina in early May to treat moderate patients who have the potential to aggravate your picture.
The technique was already applied in other parts of the world with a recovery rate close to 80% , according to specialists from the Hospital de Clínicas.
The therapy, in the case of Insaurralde, was arranged on Wednesday night "after detecting a decrease in his respiratory capacity as a result of the disease," according to what the Municipality of Lomas said in another official part.
