Involved in Northern Ireland peace agreements
In 1974, she founded the "Very Special Art Committee", an organization that promotes the artistic talents of children with disabilities.
When she was 65 years old, President Bill Clinton appointed her in 1993 ambassador of the United States in Ireland. In this post where she is appreciated by all parties and which she will occupy until 1998, Jean Kennedy Smith opens the way to an official agreement to end decades of violence in Northern Ireland. She will also receive Irish nationality on an honorary basis.
