The vacation in Europe can begin. But what about the other countries? A federal government risk list now provides new clues for this. It is a country that is particularly popular with German tourists.

Berlin (dpa) - The Federal Government has classified Turkey together with 130 other countries as a corona risk area.

The list, which was published by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for the first time on Monday and is now regularly updated, also includes other popular holiday destinations for Germans such as Egypt, Thailand and Morocco.

Incoming people from a risk area must expect to be in quarantine for 14 days. Among other things, it is hardly possible for these countries to lift the travel warning that still applies to more than 160 countries outside the European Union.

Turkey in particular, the third most popular holiday destination for Germans after Spain and Italy, is pressing for this travel warning to be lifted and for German tourists. The Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavusoglu had been disappointed a few days ago about keeping the travel warning. "The scientific reasons behind the decision are difficult for us to understand," he told Spiegel. Everything is prepared for a safe trip to Turkey.

The federal government lifted the worldwide travel warning for tourists due to the corona pandemic on Monday for 27 European countries. For more than 160 countries outside the EU, it will continue to exist until August 31, but can also be canceled beforehand for individual countries. This is hardly conceivable for a risk area.

The number of new infections is decisive for a corresponding classification. If there are more than 50 per 100,000 inhabitants within a week, a country is considered a risk area. But even if the number of infections is lower, a country can be declared a risk area - for example, if there is a lack of test capacity or insufficient measures to contain the pandemic. "It is also taken into account if there is no reliable information for certain countries," says the RKI website.

The only EU country that is still considered a risk area is Sweden. For example, Tunisia, New Zealand and Australia are not classified as risk areas by countries outside the EU.
