At the end of a dark year, started last summer by political unrest in Hong Kong, followed in October by the application of American surcharges on tricolor still wines, then by the Covid health crisis which closed all bars and restaurants, the 140,000 French winegrowers have until Friday to ask to distill all or part of their wines in vats, which are not sold.

With an envelope of public aid of 155 million euros (78 euros per hectolitre for PDOs and PGIs and 58 euros for wines without appellation), this crisis measure should cover 2 million hectoliters. Or 5% of national production (42 million hl). Once distilled, the alcohol in these wines will be used, among other things, to make hydroalcoholic gel or bioethanol.

In view of the prices, the wines concerned will not be French Grands Crus, rather mediocre vintages or table wine,
