The weapon had been stolen on December 1, at the beginning of this social movement, during the violent attack on a van in which eight police officers had taken refuge, a few hours after the sacking of the Arc de Triomphe, the object of a another investigation still in progress. This HK G36 rifle has not been found since. Protesters had surrounded the vehicle with various projectiles, and when he got out, a member of the security forces had the rifle he was carrying pulled out. In accordance with the requisitions made by the Paris public prosecutor's office in late February, the examining magistrates referred two suspects to the criminal court on June 11.

The first, aged 20, must appear for the “ concealment of property from an aggravated theft ”, as well as for the prohibited carrying and transport of a category A weapon. He had been found a few days later theft during an inspection at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. He was wearing a cap stamped " Police " and was in possession of two 5.56 caliber ammunition, according to the investigation of which AFP was aware. Faced with the investigating magistrates, he admitted having carried the weapon in a bag with a friend with the intention of reselling it, adding that the latter had kept the rifle and had never recontacted it.

The second suspect, aged 25, must be tried for a repeat theft, aggravated by violence in a meeting with a person in charge of public authority. The eight police officers, several of whom said they believed they were dying, were granted between 10 and 45 days of total work interruption (ITT), given the psychological repercussions. The man's DNA had been identified on a stone found in the van and he had been filmed throwing stones at the vehicle, as well as a smoke that had ignited inside.

Before the examining magistrates, who for a time indicted him for attempted murder, he recognized the projectile jets but only with the aim of degrading the van, without intending to attack the police themselves . Contacted by AFP, their respective lawyers, Margaux Durand-Poincloux and Xavier Nogueras, did not wish to react.
