Beijing says new outbreak "under control"

By Nectar Gan

The outbreak in Beijing, which has infected more than 100 people, will be the latest test of China's coronavirus containment strategy.

On Thursday, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the China Center for Disease Control, declared victoriously that the outbreak in Beijing is already "under control."

Wu said there are still likely to be new confirmed market-related cases that will emerge in the coming days, but they are not likely from a new transmission.

"The newly diagnosed cases that are reported every day are not equivalent to new infections and the outbreak under control does not mean that there will be zero new cases tomorrow," Wu said.

“There will be cases reported tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. These reported cases are the process of detecting previous infections. No new infections. New infections are sporadic, "said Wu.

The chief epidemiologist said it was not unexpected to see a new outbreak in Beijing, given the large number of new global cases.

"As long as there are risks of imported cases, imported infections and small-scale clusters caused by imported infections can occur anywhere in China. From this point of view, (the Beijing outbreak) is normal, ”he said.

Convalescent plasma is safe for patients with covid-19

By Jen Christensen

Convalescent plasma (blood from recovered patients who had covid-19) that was transfused into hospitalized patients is considered safe, according to a new study.

The study published Thursday in Mayo Clinic Proceedings looked at the results of 20,000 patients.

Researchers from the US Food and Drug Administration Expanded Access Program for covid-19 they looked at the results of patients who doctors say could progress to a serious or life-threatening stage of the disease. They were transfused between April 3 and June 11.

Less than 1% of patients experienced serious adverse events. The number of people who died decreased to 8.6% on the seventh day of the trial, compared to 12% who died in an earlier part of the 5,000-patient safety study.

"Our efforts to understand convalescent plasma continue," said author Dr. Michael Joyner on the Mayo Clinic website. Joyner is a principal investigator at Mayo Clinic. "We are optimistic, but we must remain objective as we evaluate increasing amounts of data."

The authors caution that the fact that the treatment is safe does not mean that it is effective in treating covid-19.

The study has limitations and further research will be necessary to determine if this works with this disease. There are several studies in progress.

Peak in coronavirus cases is "a tragedy," says Florida infectious disease expert

By Shelby Lin Erdman

Florida will become a new center for the spread of coronavirus and that's a tragedy, an infectious disease specialist at Florida International University said Thursday.

"We spend so much time and effort and suffering to reduce the original outbreak and it really is a tragedy to see the numbers start to increase," Dr. Aileen Marty told CNN's Erin Burnett.

"We have public health measures that can be used to reduce it again without having confinement if the community cooperates," Marty said.

Those measures include wearing a mask in public and maintaining social distance.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, however, has said the increase in cases in the state is a result of increased evidence and clustering of cases in places like prisons and long-term care facilities.

Marty said those communities are a very small part of the state's overall disease picture.

"If it is a reflection of what is happening, it is a very small part of the picture and the reality is that there are more hospitalizations happening here right now, so we know this is a real increase in cases," he said.
