The future of the German elite troop is at stake

SEEN FROM ELSEWHERE - There was talk of Hitler salutes, weapons found buried in a soldier's garden. A captain of the KSK now reports the existence of behaviors which one could qualify as extreme right within the elite troop.

For the elite German soldiers, it is the beginning of long weeks of truth. The declaration of the German Federal Minister of Defense is final: "Those who remain silent are part of the problem and are guilty of complicity."

These are alarming comments made by Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) about the Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK), the Bundeswehr unit that is said to house the country's most gifted, brave and esteemed soldiers. An elite troop that participates in operations that normal forces cannot provide.

However, it has been a while since the KSK has really fulfilled its mission: in recent times cases of extreme right-wing behavior and misconduct have accumulated - several weeks ago, the Landeskriminalamt of Saxony arrested a KSK soldier who buried weapons, explosives and thousands of ammunition in his garden, some of which came from stocks
