HKUST launches "Blockchain Certificate" certification platform to facilitate employers to verify graduates' education online

University diplomas are generally certified on paper. However, in recent years, there have been criminals who have forged fake university diplomas. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology announced today (22) that it will launch a "Blockchain Certificate" certification platform, which will gradually replace the traditional printed certificate to facilitate employers to verify whether prospective employees have a bachelor's degree and to combat counterfeit certificates.

University diplomas are generally certified on paper. However, in recent years, there have been criminals who have forged fake university diplomas. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology announced today (22) that it will launch a "Blockchain Certificate" certification platform, which will gradually replace the traditional printed certificate to facilitate employers to verify whether prospective employees have a bachelor's degree and to combat counterfeit certificates.

HKUST graduates will receive an electronic graduation certificate sent by e-mail, encrypted and signed with tamper resistance at the end of this month. (Provided by HKUST)

HKUST stated that it will store the “Blockchain Certificate” data on a protected server. Employers or any third-party users can verify the graduation certificate and academic transcripts of HKUST graduates on the HKUST official website at any time. 

The school has introduced the new measures to many employers such as the first-best consulting, taxation and auditing consultants of international background check agencies, taxation and audit consultants Luo Bingxian and telecommunications company Hong Kong Broadband. From the end of this month, the school will issue graduated and current students with encrypted and tamper-proof electronic graduation certificates via email.

HKUST’s “Blockchain Certificate” data will be stored on a protected server, and employers can verify HKUST graduates’ graduation certificates and academic transcripts at any time on HKUST’s website. (Provided by HKUST)

 Chen Qifeng, a member of the "Blockchain Certificate" project and an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Science and Technology, described that blockchain is a highly secure emerging technology that allows many parties to trade without a trusted intermediary. The financial or video game industries and other industries have begun to use the area Blockchain development program to improve business efficiency.

The HKUST Dean James Prince believes that blockchain certificates can help to reform the academic certification methods in Hong Kong and Greater China.
