Putin: in the Kremlin until 2036? 0:32

(CNN) - Russia's President Vladimir Putin has decidedly hinted, in a new interview, that he will run for president again, if a series of constitutional amendments allowing him to do so is approved in a referendum on July 1.

Under current Russian law, Putin would be required to resign from the presidency in 2024, when his term ends.

The amendments would pave the way for him to remain in power after his term ends, possibly until 2036.

Changes to the Constitution have already been approved by lawmakers and by the Russian Supreme Court.

In an interview, which aired Sunday on Russian state television, Putin said he did not rule out running for another term, if the amendments are approved by voters.

"You know, I'm going to say it quite frankly now: if this [constitutional change] doesn't happen, in two years, I know from my own experience, instead of normal, constant work at various levels of power, everyone will start looking for possible successors Putin, 67, said.

"We need to continue the work, not look for successors," he added.

Putin served as President of Russia from 2000 to 2008, then returned to office in 2012. He served as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000, and between his two presidential terms, from 2008 to 2012.
