The move " exposes the hypocrisy of so-called free speech and the press that the United States boasts of to the public," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian. In front of the press, Mr. Zhao called on Washington to reverse its decision " immediately ", " otherwise China will have no choice but to adopt an appropriate reaction ".

American Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo announced Monday that he has requested the designation of " four additional propaganda organs of the People's Republic of China as foreign diplomatic missions ". list of their personnel and their property. The measure targets China Central Television (CCTV), the China News Service (CNS), the People's Daily and the Global Times. It is in addition to an identical decision already taken in February against five other Chinese public media (the China News agency, China Global Television Network, Radio China International and the American distributors of the People's Daily and of the newspaper China Daily).

A diplomatic ping-pong

At the end of February, three journalists from the Wall Street Journal were expelled from China in retaliation for a column published in the American daily and considered racist by Beijing. In the process, Washington had sharply reduced the number of Chinese allowed to work for their country's state media in the United States. The Chinese authorities had responded by expelling a dozen American correspondents, working for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the Washington Post.

Asked about the risk that Monday's announcement could lead to further reprisals against independent journalists working on the Chinese side, the assistant American Secretary of State for East Asia, David Stilwell, did not not excluded this scenario. Human rights defenders fear that Beijing will use this " pretext " to make the work of the international press in the country even more difficult.
