For the pandemic to move to younger people means more spread, expert says

By Maggie Fox

Shifting the focus of the coronavirus pandemic to younger Americans is not necessarily good news, said Dr. Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute.

Parts of Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and other states, many of which were some of the first to reopen after the closings, have reported new cases of coronavirus being diagnosed in younger and younger populations.

"We have learned that younger people are less likely to get sick and less likely to die from the virus," Jha told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. But even if they don't get sick themselves, they can infect others, Jha said.

"Those younger people have parents. They have grandparents and they are going to go see those people, ”added Jha.

"The more the virus spreads, the more vulnerable everyone is," Jha said.

A study suggests that 80% of covid-19 cases went undetected in the US in March.

By Maggie Fox

A new study suggests that up to 8.7 million Americans contracted coronaviruses in March, but that 80% of them were never diagnosed.

A team of researchers analyzed the number of people who went to doctors or clinics with influenza-like illnesses that were never diagnosed as coronaviruses, influenza, or any of the other viruses that generally circulate in winter.

There was a giant spike in these cases in March, the researchers reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine .

"The findings support a scenario in which more than 8.7 million new SARS-CoV-2 infections appeared in the US during March and estimate that over 80% of these cases remained unidentified as the outbreak spread rapidly, "wrote Justin Silverman of Penn State University and colleagues at Cornell University and elsewhere.

Only 100,000 cases were officially reported during that period, and the United States still reports just 2.3 million cases as of Monday. But there was a shortage of coronavirus test kits at the time.

The team used data collected from each state by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. USA for influenza-like illnesses. The CDC uses this data to track the annual seasonal flu epidemic.

"We found a clear and abnormal increase in outpatients with influenza-like illness (ILI) during the covid-19 epidemic that correlated with the progression of the epidemic in several states in the United States," Silverman and colleagues wrote.

"The increase in outpatients with ILI without influenza was much greater than the number of confirmed cases in each state, providing evidence of a large number of probable symptomatic cases of COVID-19 that were not detected."

Paraguay presents cases of covid-19 in the prison system for the first time

By Sanie LĂłpez Garelli

The Paraguayan Ministry of Health reported on Monday that two positive cases of covid-19 were registered in the Ciudad del Este Regional Prison, very close to the Brazilian border. At a press conference, the authorities confirmed that a prisoner and a prison security officer had mild symptoms of coronavirus, and therefore underwent a swab test, which finally tested positive.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that both people were placed in isolation to avoid new infections.

Daniel Cantero, from the Penitentiary Health Directorate, said that measures are being taken to find out how many people are affected: “Samples are expected to be taken from all inmates at the Ciudad del Este Prison, which number about 1,000 people, and also to all prison officers. ”

Dr. Hugo Kunzle, director of health policy for the Department of Alto Paraná, stated that it is unknown how the inmate and the agent were infected, and clarified that "an outbreak within the establishment is not ruled out." Kunzle emphasized that "visits were not allowed to avoid contagion, and that is why at this time we are going to work much harder with officials, inmates and security personnel to achieve a stricter blockade."

According to the official report of the Ministry of Health, corresponding to Monday, June 22, Paraguay registers a total of 1,392 positive cases and 13 deaths from coronavirus.

Fauci: Increase in cases among youth "not surprising"

By: Jacqueline Howard of CNN

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's leading infectious disease expert, told Axios that the recent high number of cases in youth "is not surprising."

Fauci was referring to how younger people are more likely to engage in riskier behaviors right now, Caitlin Owens of Axios reported.

“First they get infected, then they go home and then they infect older people. Older people have complications and then they go to hospitals, ”Fauci told Owens. "The death rate always comes several weeks at the infection rate."

Some context: State officials across the South warned that more young people in their 20s and 30s are now testing positive for the new coronavirus.

This recent surge in cases among young adults could reduce covid-19 death rates, Dr. Tom Frieden, former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote on Twitter. USA

Gilead announces plans to test inhaled version of remdesivir

Gilead Sciences, the company that makes the antiviral drug remdesivir, announced Monday that trials of an inhaled version of the drug are about to begin.

Currently administered intravenously through infusions, Remdesivir is the only medication that has an emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration to be used to treat coronavirus infections.

"After receiving the green light from the FDA to move forward, Gilead is about to begin testing an inhaled version of remdesivir. We will examine healthy volunteers for Phase 1 testing this week and hope to begin studies in covid-19 patients in August, ”said Daniel O'Day, president and CEO of Gilead Sciences, in an open letter Monday.

“If the trials are successful, this could represent significant progress. Remdesivir, our investigational antiviral medication, is currently administered intravenously to patients through daily infusions in the hospital, ”O'Day said. “An inhaled formulation would be administered through a nebulizer, which could allow for easier administration outside of the hospital, in the early stages of the disease. That could have significant implications to help stem the tide of the pandemic. "

The letter went on to explain how there are also plans to study remdesivir in covid-19 treatment earlier in disease progression, in combination with other therapies and in additional patient groups. Last week, Gilead announced that it would begin advanced testing of the drug in children.

Remdesivir was originally studied as a potential treatment for Ebola, but laboratory experiments revealed that it might work against the coronavirus. Gilead's Monday letter noted that the company expects to have more than 2 million remdesivir treatments manufactured by the end of the year, and many more millions by 2021.

Reproduction rate of coronavirus in Germany soars

By Fred Pleitgen

The number of replications of the coronavirus has increased considerably in Germany, the country's disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute, reported Sunday.

This figure, also called the R number, stands at 2.88 in Germany.

An R number of 1 means that each person with coronavirus infects another person on average.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeatedly warned that the country must keep the R number below 1 to contain the disease, and that an increase in the rate could see restrictions tightened.

This massive jump in the R number nationwide is due to a local outbreak at a meat processing plant in the city of Gutersloh, the Robert Koch Institute said. There are now at least 1,331 positive cases at the factory, city authorities said Sunday.

"Since the numbers of cases in Germany are generally low, these local outbreaks have a relatively strong influence on the value of the breeding number," said the Robert Koch Institute in its daily report.
