Yemeni rebels claimed via their Al-Massirah channel to have targeted " military sites ", notably in the capital of the kingdom, and threatened with a "major attack on Saudi soil ". Coalition spokesman Colonel Turki al-Maliki said that " eight drones loaded with explosives " and " three ballistic missiles " had been destroyed .

He told the Saudi official SPA agency that a fourth missile had been destroyed after being fired " from Sanaa towards Ryad in an operation (...) planned to target sites as well as civilians ". Three witnesses in Riyadh confirmed to AFP that they heard the noise of the explosion Tuesday at dawn.

Saudi intervention since 2015

Saudi Arabia has intervened in Yemen since 2015 to support government forces against the Houthi rebels. Supported by Iran, the latter seized entire swathes of the north of the country, including the capital Sanaa. " We are going to carry out more and more important military operations ," warned on Tuesday the spokesman of their armed wing, Yahia Saree.

Saudi Arabia was the target of dozens of ballistic missile and drone attacks in the past year. Attacks on its giant oil giant Aramco's facilities in eastern Saudi Arabia in September caused significant damage and momentarily halved oil production by the world's largest oil exporter. The Houthis had claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the United States had blamed Iran, which denied it. The Islamic Republic, however, assumes its political support for the rebels.

The Yemen War has claimed tens of thousands of lives, most of them civilians, and the UN says around 24 million Yemenis - more than two-thirds of the population - depend on humanitarian aid.
