PGA Tour: a less prestigious field and an omnipresent Covid-19

2020-07-01T21:34:30.992Z

PRESENTATION - Coronavirus positive cases have followed one another in Connecticut last week, leading to the withdrawal of several golfers and caddies. What will happen to Detroit, which hosts the second edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic?

After Texas, South Carolina and Connecticut, the PGA Tour settles down this week in Detroit (Michigan) for the second edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, born last year and which saw the American Nate Lashley win with six strokes ahead of compatriot Doc Redman having led the event from start to finish.

A US circuit somewhat "in the ropes" at the moment with these positive cases at Covid-19 which are linked at a pace, alas, sustained. Since Nick Watney's been at RBC Heritage a fortnight ago, four other golfers have been forced to withdraw. Not to mention the caddies of Brooks Koepka and Graeme McDowell, also affected. The last one is called Harris English. Absent from the Travelers Championship, he was not authorized this Monday to visit the Detroit site. Health protocols have thus been strengthened, prohibiting for example anyone from setting foot in the precinct where the tournament is taking place if their test has not been negative.

Unlike the first three meetings of the PGA Tour since the resumption on June 11, the Rocket Mortgage Classic does not enjoy such a prestigious plateau despite an attractive endowment ($ 7.5 million). From the top 10 in the world, there are only three to start: Webb Simpson, n ° 6, Patrick Reed, n ° 7, and Bryson DeChambeau, n ° 10. The latter is also positioned as one of the big favorites to victory. The Californian completely physically transformed during confinement (20 kilos of muscles more) remains on a superb series of top 10: 3rd at the Charles Schwab Challenge, 8th at the RBC Heritage and 6th at the Travelers Championship. This itinerant missile launcher (320 yards approximately) should however be wary of the Detroit Golf Club, a par 72 of 7,334 yards (6,706 meters) largely centenary, designed by the legend Donald Ross (to whom we owe in particular Pinehurst 2, East Lake or Oakland Hills) but made much less easy after a 2019 “open house” edition. A year ago, the cut had indeed been set at -5 (the lowest on the PGA Tour since 2016). The organizers therefore decided to make matters worse with a much thicker and dissuasive rough, just to make the lives of these gentlemen a little more complicated…
