The President of Venezuela retaliated after sanctions against 11 Venezuelan officials. The EU has announced that it will do the same with

Tensions between Venezuela and the European Union. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro gave 72 hours on Monday to the head of the European Union delegation in Caracas, the capital, to leave Venezuela. The move comes in response to EU sanctions adopted on the same day against 11 Venezuelan officials.

The Socialist President announced the expulsion of the EU representative, Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa, during a speech at the presidential palace in Miraflores. “Who are they to try to impose themselves by threat? Who are they? That's enough! That is why I decided to give the European Union ambassador 72 hours to leave our country, "said the Head of State. "We will settle this in 72 hours (...) We will provide her with a plane to go, but we will put our affairs in order with the European Union," he continued. Venezuela has suspended commercial flights due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

A country already sanctioned by the EU

The EU sanctioned eleven Venezuelan officials involved in actions against the opposition to the government of Nicolas Maduro on Monday, including Luis Parra, who tried to replace Juan Guaido in the presidency of the parliament in May. Juan Guaido is recognized as interim president of Venezuela by around fifty countries. "The alleged election of Luis Parra was not legitimate because it did not respect legal procedures and democratic constitutional principles," said the European Union. In addition, Venezuela was the first Latin American country in 2017 to be subject to sanctions by the EU.

In response to the expulsion of its representative, the European Union has decided to act in the same way on Tuesday. The head of diplomacy, Josep Borrell, condemned the expulsion and announced measures of "reciprocity". "We condemn and refuse the expulsion of our ambassador to Caracas and we will take reciprocal measures," he announced on Twitter, in Spanish, while he generally favors English.

Condenamos y rechazamos la expulsionión de nuestra embajadora en Caracas.Tomaremos las medidas necesarias habituales de reciprocidad. Soo a solución negociada entre Venezolanos permitirá al país de salir de su profunda crisis.

"Only a solution negotiated between the Venezuelans will allow the country to emerge from its deep crisis," added the head of European diplomacy.
