Grosjean-Ocon-Gasly: The return of the three Musketeers

2020-07-02T23:35:12.387Z

After a year with two representatives, France will again have three drivers in Formula 1 in 2020: Romain Grosjean, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.

As there were two years ago, the French will be three in number this season in Formula 1 (given that Charles Leclerc is indeed Monegasque and not French). Starting with the unstoppable Romain Grosjean, who will be celebrating his tenth season in F1 at the wheel of a Haas which will probably not allow him to perform miracles. "The goal is necessarily to do better than last season," he hopes in an interview with Le Figaro. Difficult to do worse because we finished penultimate in the ranking. We will see if we managed to straighten the bar to fight from time to time for points. The winter tests were rather positive but it was five months ago ... Have the other teams made any changes since then? I do not know." For Grosjean, having a good season will also be essential if he wants to keep his place in the paddock when his contract with Haas will end at the end of the season.

"If it is good enough to get podiums, then I will have to make podiums"

Pierre Gasly

Pierre Gasly will try to forget his disappointment from last year when he lost his place at Red Bull during the summer break to return to Toro Rosso, who became Alpha Tauri this year. A "downgrade" that he had initially experienced badly, before demonstrating a good ability to rebound by winning second place in Brazil, his first career podium making him the youngest French driver to achieve such a performance (at 23 years and 9 months). Having entered his 24th year, the native of Rouen now wants to be more pragmatic when talking about his objectives for the year: “I want to be more regular because there are always areas where I can improve. After, everything will depend on the level of my car. If it is good enough to get podiums, then I will have to make podiums. And if it is just to get into the top 10, then I will have to score points. My only goal is to do my best with the car I have. ”

Ocon returns to the game

Finally, the third Musketeer is a ghost: Esteban Ocon. At Renault, the latter will have a lot to prove to regain performance, he who had greatly seduced in 2017 for his first full season (8th in the Championship with 87 points entered at the wheel of a Force India) before returning to rank l '' following year (12th) and to disappear, altogether, in 2019 (3rd driver at Mercedes). For his reunion with the hexagonal team, Ocon wants to shine, while being realistic as he had entrusted to Le Figaro last December. “From a very young age, it's only victory that interests me. But in F1, you have to do with what you have in your hands, and you don't always have the best car. The important thing is to keep your motivation to make it progress and one day get there. My goal is to be world champion. I don't want to be 7th or 8th. ” It remains to be seen whether the brand in Losange, which would like to take 4th place from the manufacturers, will provide it with a car that is competitive enough for that.
