The Brazilian Minister of Education, the military Carlos Alberto Decotelli, announced on Tuesday that he resigned from the post five days after being appointed, although he had not yet assumed office.
The information comes after suspicions in his resume, in which he claimed that he had obtained a doctorate from the National University of Rosario, in Argentina, and that of Hannover, Germany.
However, this weekend the Rosario University reported that Decotelli did doctoral studies at that center, but that his final thesis was not approved, so he did not obtain the degree.
Also the German university also explained that Decotelli studied some subjects in Wuppertal, but clarified that it was not postgraduate studies and that he had not obtained any degree from that institution.
To make matters worse, the Getulio Vargas Foundation, Brazil's renowned center for economic and political studies, reported that it opened an investigation into the master's thesis presented by Decotelli, approved at the time, as suspicions of plagiarism have arisen in that work.
With this resignation he is the third Minister of Education that President Jair Bolsonaro has lost since he took office in 2019.
Decotelli was to replace Abraham Weintraub, a controversial far-right agitator who resigned last week amid heavy pressure from vast sections of the government's parliamentary base that caused him great wear and tear.
