A London court has recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guido as the undisputed president of the South American state, effectively denying the incumbent Prime Minister Nicholas Maduro's government access to the Venezuelan gold held by the Bank of England.

The decision was taken by the London High Court on Thursday in a petition filed by the Central Bank of Venezuela to recover more than $ 1 billion worth of gold bullion.

"Whatever the reason for this recognition, Her Majesty's Government unconditionally recognizes Guido as Venezuelan President," Judge Nigel Tier said in a statement released by the IP. He also stated that London "will no longer recognize his president as Venezuelan president and there is no reason to recognize Guido as de jure president and his de facto section."

According to the news agency, attorneys representing the Venezuelan government in proceedings have announced their intention to appeal this decision in a higher court case. Remember, in April, Caracas demanded from the Bank of England to sell it. The documents revealed in Reuters that Venezuelan authorities want to use the money to fight the Corona virus, purchase drugs and food products for a population in severe humanitarian crisis. But the English authorities say his generation will use the gold profits for his own personal needs. The Bank of England holds 31 tons of Venezuelan gold bullion.

Meanwhile, on Monday this week EU sanctions were announced against 11 Venezuelan MPs for trying to thwart Guido's rule and torpedo democracy in the country. They were banned from entering EU countries and their accounts in the European banks were frozen. Overall, the EU blacklist includes 36 Venezuelan citizens. Britain announced it joins European sanctions against the South American state.
