The interim government of Bolivia on Tuesday accused former Bolivian President Evo Morales, who lives in exile, of trying to "destabilize" the country and of carrying out a campaign of "disinformation" in preparation for the next elections. The Foreign Ministry accused in a statement Evo Morales of leading this campaign since his exile in Argentina with the complicity of the power of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. "Areas close to Mr. Morales are trying to destabilize the country, create chaos and worsen the health crisis" caused by Covid-19, said the ministry, according to which this campaign is "taken advantage of by drug trafficking and by organized crime ” .

Furthermore, "Mr. Morales, with the complicity of the regime of Nicolas Maduro, has reinforced its international campaign of disinformation and dissemination of false news to hamper the struggle of the Bolivian people for the restoration of democracy, " said the Foreign Ministry. The government, which is led by interim president Jeanine Añez, regularly accuses the Movement towards Socialism (MAS), Mr. Morales' party, of raising discontent among the Bolivian population.

The government has intensified its attacks on the MAS, which holds a large majority in each of the two chambers of the Bolivian parliament, ahead of the general elections to be held on September 6. This date was set by the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) against the opinion of Jeanine Añez, who wanted a postponement of "a month or two" so that attention focused on the fight against the coronavirus. Jeanine Añez, a right-wing senator, became interim president after the resignation in November 2019 of the socialist Evo Morales and his departure for exile. She is a candidate in the presidential election in September.

A poll indicates that Jeanine Añez comes third in the voting intentions with 16%, ahead of the centrist Carlos Mesa (18%) and by the dolphin of Evo Morales, the economist Luis Arce, credited with 33.3% . Evo Morales does not have the right to run for president. His candidacy was rejected and he is under arrest for sedition.

After several weeks of demonstrations and his release by the police and the army, he announced his resignation and the elections were canceled.

Bolivia has, according to the latest report, 32,125 confirmed cases of contamination and 1,071 deaths related to Covid-19.
