The new national security law passed in China is "the most important event" for Hong Kong since its handover in 1997, said the chief executive of the territory, Carrie Lam. "The national security law is considered the most important event in relations between the central government and Hong Kong since the handover," Carrie Lam said at a ceremony to mark the 23rd anniversary of the return to China of the former British colony.
