The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the "Hong Kong Autonomy Law" on July 2 and it came into force after it was signed by President Donald Trump.

The relevant bill was unanimously passed in the House of Representatives on the 1st, authorizing the Washington government to sanction Chinese officials who assist the Chinese government in implementing the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law, and punish banks or officials involved in suppressing Hong Kong’s freedom.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on the 1st that Washington desperately needed the "Hong Kong Autonomy Law" in response to the Chinese government's implementation of the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law, referring to Beijing's actions threatening the one country, two systems promised to Hong Kong people 23 years ago. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believes that the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law tramples on local freedom and autonomy. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned the Beijing move for jeopardizing the safety of all people living in Hong Kong.

Republican Senator Pat Toomey and Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen who proposed the "Hong Kong Autonomy Law" pointed out that the sanctions may include the Hong Kong police. The legislation also includes provisions to allow the Senate and House of Representatives to overturn the President’s decision to waive or suspend sanctions.

In addition, Vice President Mike Pence said in an interview with CNBC on the 2nd that China's implementation of the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law is contrary to the international agreement signed by Beijing, saying that the move is not accepted by people who love freedom worldwide.
