French want to change policy but not prime minister

2020-07-03T02:16:07.706Z

SURVEY - After the municipal elections, 75% of them are calling for an ecological and social turning point, but a majority want the retention of Edouard Philippe, according to a Odoxa-Dentsu Consulting survey for Le Figaro and France Info.

Change policies and ministers, without replacing the first one. The sentence has everything of a new declension of the "at the same time" macronist. It actually sums up the will of a majority of the population, according to the Odoxa-Dentsu Consulting poll for Le Figaro and France Info, published on Thursday.

The head of state had promised to "reinvent himself" after the health crisis, the French take it at his word. Until the end of his five-year term, 75% of them want Emmanuel Macron to reform his political action. Two-thirds (67%), all political sides combined, believe that this new course requires a renewal of the government.

59% of French people against Philippe leaving

But not by a change in the Prime Minister, Édouard Philippe, at the Matignon hotel for three years: 59% of French people disapprove of a possible departure. In this regard, Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) takes on the appearance of a seismograph of public opinion: the same proportion of voters (58.83%) supported the list (various centers) led by the Prime Minister on Sunday. A local triumph with a national impact. In public opinion, only the supporters of La France insoumise (LFI) and the RN are calling for the majority (65% and 57% respectively) for the appointment of a new prime minister.

"The French are decidedly " clearers " , but the popular Edouard Philippe escapes this great sweep desired by the public" , notes Gaël Sliman, president of the Odoxa institute. According to the latest Kantar- Le Figaro Magazine barometer , the Prime Minister's confidence rating even jumped 10 points compared to March, reaching 40%, ahead of Emmanuel Macron (33%, + 5 points). The ordeal of the health crisis, crossed by the executive, has strengthened the foundation of the majority leader.

Wish of a green turning point

Will he be the man of the ecological and social turning point, desired by 67% of the French according to our survey? "(Emmanuel Macron) knows what I embody, what I can do and what I can't do," warned the Republican defector in Paris-Normandy on June 16. The wish for a social-ecological inflection remains formulated by most of the political sympathizers, whatever their membership, with the exception of those of the National Rally (RN, 53% are opposed to it).

Emmanuel Macron seems to want to take this path: he promised to "rebuild a strong, ecological, sovereign and united economy" , in his last televised speech. And taken up almost all of the proposals of the Citizen's Climate Convention, Monday, the day after the push of the Greens in major cities.

After municipal and inter-municipal elections, the Head of State is aware that he cannot escape the advance of Europe Ecology-The Greens (EELV) in the political landscape. A movement considered as a “future” party by most French people (63%), majority convinced (61%) that it is “useful for our political life”. The Greens will however have to take up the credibility challenge: their party is considered dangerous for the economy by 59% of the population.
