French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Jean Castex as head of government as a substitute for Edouard Philippe, according to the Elysee.
According to Agence France-Presse, 55-year-old Castex was a former assistant to former President Nicolas Sarkozy, a Republican and head of the municipality of Brad in southwestern France. Since April, he has been appointed as an inter-ministerial commissioner to lift isolation measures.
The French presidency had announced earlier that Philip submitted the resignation of his government to President Macron, who accepted it.
The decision to resign comes after the Coruna virus outbreak, during which the French government came under heavy criticism and the defeat of the Republic (Forward) party that Macron founded in the local elections.
