Only victory is beautiful. And environmentalists can look forward to reigning now (even through Anne Hidalgo) over the country's three main cities and a handful of other major cities. With the media magnifying glass effect, it almost looks like the whole of France has gone green.
However, the real wave of last Sunday was that of the abstainers: only four out of ten voters went to vote. And on the 236 French cities of more than 30,000 inhabitants, the ecologists never direct more than 10. Let us add that the average score of their lists in the first round of municipal elections was 16%, which remains after all modest.
But what does the cold reality of statistics matter. Like Marxism in other times, ecology is today strong of moral leadership which gives it all the audacity. It responds to the fear of the future caused by global warming, it offers a new model of development to all those who dream of another
