The former PS senator Samia Ghali, whose votes are crucial for the election of the new mayor of Marseille, claimed her freedom to vote on Saturday at the municipal council after the "incomprehensible refusal" of Michèle Rubirola, the union candidate the left, to accept her request to be first assistant. "This incomprehensible refusal reflects an unbearable contempt for the northern and working-class districts of our city," regretted Samia Ghali, victorious Sunday in the second round in the 8th sector of Marseille, in a statement on Twitter. "Talking about blackmail or haggling in response to my request proves that the Printemps Marseillais did not understand the social emergency and the suffering of the inhabitants of lower-income neighborhoods , " insisted the senator.

"I will not be hostage to any blackmail," replied Friday during the day Michèle Rubirola, the environmental leader of the Printemps Marseillais, a broad alliance of leftist parties, after Mrs. Ghali announced that she was conditioning her support for obtaining the position of first assistant. Faced with this refusal of Printemps Marseillais to accept his request, as part of an alliance between their two forces to lead the municipality, the senator from Bouches-du-Rhône clearly displayed his freedom to vote on Saturday, as part of the city council which must elect the successor of Jean-Claude Gaudin, mayor LR of the second city of France for 25 years. "I now feel free, with all of my running mate, to make the best choice to defend our neighborhoods and meet the legitimate expectations of their inhabitants who can no longer be stigmatized, forgotten and relegated" .

Le Printemps Marseillais with only 42 elected to the municipal council, despite its 38.28% of the vote on Sunday in the second round of the municipal elections, against 39 for the Republicans, who nevertheless only attracted 30.75% of the votes, the nine votes of Samia Ghali were essential to Michèle Rubirola to reach the absolute majority of 51 votes out of 101 necessary to secure the mayor's chair. The other municipal councilors are nine elected from the National Rally and two elected from the lists of Senator LR dissident Bruno Gilles. This position taken by Samia Ghali therefore makes the vote on Saturday even more uncertain, during a veritable "third round" of municipal elections in Marseille.

Except for Michèle Rubirola, the elected ecologist designated to lead the Printemps Marseillais, the other candidates for the mayor of Marseille on Saturday are the deputy LR Guy Teissier, his deputy, Lionel Royer-Perreaut, and the senator RN Stéphane Ravier. Lionel Royer-Perreaut entered the contest after hearing of "ongoing agreements with the National Front" , a prospect that was officially rejected by the local and national leaders of his party.
