The Hong Kong version of the National Security Law stipulates that Hong Kong residents shall sign documents to confirm or take oaths in support of the Basic Law and loyal to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China when they run for election or assume public office.

Liang Zhenying, deputy chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and former chief executive, said that the candidates of the Legislative Council must sign a confirmation letter to abide by the National Security Law, clearly opposing Hong Kong independence and Taiwan independence.

Said not to be confused with "don't support Hong Kong independence"

Liang Zhenying said on Facebook that the Basic Law stipulates that "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is an inseparable part of the People's Republic of China"; the National Security Law stipulates that "separate the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region or any other part of the People's Republic of China from the People's Republic of China". It is a crime, so the candidates in the Legislative Council should confirm in writing to abide by the National Security Law and expressly oppose Hong Kong independence and Taiwan independence. The general public can no longer be confused by "not supporting Hong Kong independence" and "respecting the wishes of the people of Taiwan".

The nomination period for the election of the Legislative Council begins on the 18th of this month. The democratic parties have not agreed on whether to sign the confirmation letter. Taking Kowloon East as an example, the former Hong Kong Zhi Zhi Huang Zhifeng, the Democratic Party Hu Zhiwei, the Democratic Association Shi Delai, the People’s Power Tan Dezhi and others All indicated that the refusal of the visa, the Civic Party Tan Wenhao said that it depends on the opinions of the citizens.
