A whale shark was observed a few meters off the coast of Eilat on Saturday. According to the recent video posted on social networks, the shark swam right next to the bathers. An investigation reveals that this is a familiar whale shark that is often seen in the southern city. Divers swam beside him and posted photos in recent weeks.

The municipality of Eilat points out that despite the panic it is a shark that is not dangerous and there are beaches where the water is also deep near the shore itself and therefore it is possible that the shark will swim near the bathers in some cases. Eilat has hosted more than 150,000 tourists in the last few weeks since the hotels opened. Quite a few hotels report full occupancy and high demand until after the holidays
Rachel Elkayam, a resident of Eilat who was staying at the Village Beach in the city while the whale shark came close to the beach, said most people were very excited to see him. "There were some who came under pressure, but most of them were excited. He looked pretty big."
Adi Barash, a doctoral student at the University of Haifa and chairman of the Sharks Association in Israel, said: "This is a whale shark.
