Some 300 journalists signed a petition in the country's main newspapers to repudiate intimidation of the press.

After ADEPA, FOPEA and the National Academy of Journalism repudiated Kirchner attacks on Jorge Lanata and Luis Majul , among others, some 300 journalists published a request in different media in the country against intimidation of the press.

" We emphatically reject the public defamation campaigns and pressures against professional journalists unleashed in recent weeks from some sectors of the political power, including those who have functions of the highest institutional responsibility," the statement begins.

"Every citizen has the right to question a note or the opinion of a journalist, but when the escrache is used with unfounded accusations of illegal espionage, insults and personal attacks, a dangerous border is crossed for the exercise of freedom of expression and democratic coexistence "adds the text, which was signed by Magdalena Ruiz Guiñazú, Joaquín Morales Solá, Jorge Lanata, Luis Majul, Marcelo Longobardi and María Laura Santillán, among others.

The journalists also pointed out that "the plurality of ideas and voices and the tolerance with which he thinks differently are keys to the democracy that we reconquered in 1983."

Days ago, in three different statements, the main journalistic entities had criticized the vice president Cristina Kirchner, for a video in which she accused several journalists of being accomplices of an illicit association that spied on her illegally; and Senator Oscar Parrilli (Frente de Todos) for the harassment of journalists such as Luis Majul, Jorge Lanata, Daniel Santoro and Nicolás Wiñazki. In addition, they questioned the statements of the opposition deputy Fernando Iglesias against the journalist Rosario Ayerdi and Editorial Perfil.

In the face of attacks and intimidations against journalists

We, the undersigned, emphatically reject the public defamation campaigns and pressures against professional journalists unleashed in recent weeks from some sectors of the political power, including those with functions of the highest institutional responsibility.

Every citizen has the right to question a note or the opinion of a journalist, but when recourse is made to the escra-es with unfounded accusations of illegal espionage, insults and personal attacks, a dangerous border is crossed for the exercise of freedom of expression and coexistence democratic. Recent public attacks and intimidations against journalists, as well as espionage actions and other abuses of political power, worry and deserve reflection to recreate a scenario of tolerance. Stigmatization, especially when it has momentum from the State, conditions the role of the press, tries to generate fear and promotes self-censorship. The plurality of ideas and voices and the tolerance with which he thinks differently are keys to the democracy that we reconquered in 1983.

Governors, legislators and other public officials not only have to respect freedom of the press, of expression and of investigation, but also help build a public climate that allows the exercise of those rights.
