It is a trial not quite like the others which opens Monday in Paris before the specially composed Assize Court, therefore without jurors. First of all because, scheduled until July 10, the debates could be held behind closed doors. Then because there is silence around the three defendants (two men and the wife of one of them) whose lawyers have told Le Figaro that they do not wish to "communicate for the moment" .
Finally and above all because the accusation is extremely serious. Former members of the Directorate General of External Security (DGSE), retired for a long time, the two men in the box, one bordering on 70 years and the other exceeding them, are accused of having betrayed France for the benefit of the People's Republic of China. Very rare accusations and an even rarer trial, which recalls the handful of espionage cases tried during the Cold War or in its continuity and sometimes appearing as so many signals sent to suspected countries
