Age, gender… the new government in figures

2020-07-07T18:19:04.179Z

The new team of 30 ministers, made up of 17 women and 13 men and aged 51 on average, was appointed on Monday by Emmanuel Macr

He wanted a government of "mission and assembly". Emmanuel Macron appointed 30 ministers (including 14 deputy ministers), whose names were communicated by the secretary general of the Elysée, Alexis Kohler, this Monday at the end of the day.

They form the first government of Jean Castex, appointed Prime Minister on Friday June 3. The Secretaries of State will be contacted in the coming days.

Average age: 51 years. These thirty ministers are 51 years old on average, according to our calculations. In order to compare on an equivalent basis with previous governments under Emmanuel Macron, François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy, we have, each time, calculated the average age of government only by taking into account the ministers (or deputy ministers) and not the secretaries of State. Especially since the latter can lower the average age of government since they are often less experienced and therefore younger than the tenured ministers.

In this context, the average age of the first three governments of Edouard Philippe, in 2017, was higher (over 56 years each time) than that of the teams of ministers under Nicolas Sarkozy (between 52 and 54 years) and under François Hollande (between 52 and 55 years old). The two governments of Jean-Marc Ayrault included 35 and 38 ministers (or deputy ministers), against twenty under Edouard Philippe.

That of Jean Castex, made up of 30 ministers, is therefore much younger than the previous ones. Even if he is of the same average age (51 years) as the second version of the Philippe II government, which had only 21 ministers or deputy ministers, in March 2018.

Parity respected. The parity, a commitment of Emmanuel Macron and the Prime Minister, is perfectly respected within the full-service ministers, with eight women and eight men. There are even more women than men in the deputy ministers, nine and five respectively.

It remains to be seen the result when the Secretaries of State will be taken into account. The only one who has already been appointed at the moment is a man: Gabriel Attal, who will act as spokesperson for the government.
