US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday welcomed the first sanctions announced by the United Kingdom since leaving the European Union and targeting Russian and Saudi entities, measures introduced as part of a new mechanism put in place by London to punish human rights violations.

" These sanctions mark the beginning of a new era for British sanctions policy and cooperation between our two democracies, " said the head of the American diplomacy in a statement.
