Aberdeen Street fish stall carp detected trace malachite green food safety center ordered to stop sales

The Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (7th) that Henghua random inspection found that a carp sample was found to have traces of malachite green in a fish stall at Shop 5, G/F, Aberdeen Street. The center is following up on the incident. The spokesman said that the center is known to be involved in the above-mentioned violations of the filers, and ordered them to stop selling the relevant products, and will continue to trace the source of the products.

 A spokesman for the centre said that the centre has taken the above-mentioned carp samples from a stall in Aberdeen Street for testing through the constant food monitoring program. The results showed that the samples contained traces of malachite green and the content was 1.5 parts per billion.

The spokesman said that the center is known to be involved in the above-mentioned violations of the filers, and ordered them to stop selling the relevant products. The center is also tracing the source of the product and will continue to follow up the incident and take appropriate action. The investigation continues. 

Malachite green is an industrial dye used to treat fish diseases. At present, many countries have banned the use of malachite green in food animals. According to the Hazardous Substances in Food Regulations (Chapter 132AF), all food sold in Hong Kong must not contain malachite green. Violators will be prosecuted. Upon conviction, they will be fined 50,000 yuan and imprisoned for 6 months.
