The " extremely violent " attack , which left Philippe Monguillot, 59, in a state of brain death, took place Sunday after 7:00 p.m. at a bus stop in the popular district of Balichon. Initially, " three people, including one with a dog, board the Tram'bus at the Bayonne train station stop ," explained the deputy prosecutor during a press conference.

A fourth man then goes up to the Balichon stop. The driver then wants to check his ticket and asks the three others to put a mask on their face. The insults burst out then there is a stampede. The driver is pushed out of the bus. There, two of the individuals kicked and punched him violently in the upper part of the body, particularly towards his head . ”

Known to police services

The four men flee leaving the driver " unconscious on the sidewalk " and will " take refuge in the apartment of one of them ", he added, ensuring that " nothing explains this extreme violence ”. A first suspect was quickly arrested on Sunday. Four others were killed on Monday, including a minor quickly exonerated.

" The violence of the beatings, their aim, and the statements (during the hearings) allow me to retain the qualification of attempted manslaughter for the two accused who carried out the beatings, " said Mr. Bride.

Aged 22 and 23, they are known to the police. The prosecution requested their detention, as well as for the two other defendants, of whom the prosecution requests, for one, an indictment for " removal of criminal from arrest and searches and non-assistance to anyone in danger ”and, for the other, for“ failure to assist a person in danger ”. The four men must be presented to an investigating judge for their examination.
