The president of Banco Macro, Jorge Brito, affirmed that it is necessary to generate a $ 5,000 banknote due to the small amount of paper money that exists with the value of $ 1,000 and because, he assured, "people doubled the amount of cash they had."
In an interview with Rivadavia radio, Brito was consulted by different complaints from users who said they had to go to ATMs more than five times because only hundred-peso bills were delivered . Also, the businessman referred to the negotiation of the ongoing debt and expressed his support for the management of Minister Martín Guzmán.
Faced with this, the banker replied: " Unfortunately there are no $ 1,000 bills. The Casa de la Moneda is issuing as much as it can and is not enough. They have to take out $ 100 treasured bills for it to reach the currency," he began.
Then he gave his theory of why banknotes are missing from ATMs: "Due to the pandemic, everyone has doubled or tripled the amount of cash they had. We told the Central Bank this but they are not enough. We would have to take out a bill of a higher denomination, five thousand, "he said.
In this sense, he argued that the problem would be seen in a few months: "When we have to pay the Christmas bonuses in December, there will be a serious problem."
Clarín had already echoed this difficulty at the end of May, when the problem that was generated in the banks began to be seen. A situation that complicates the daily operation of the treasuries and affects people, not only because of the tediousness of receiving in several dozen banknotes amounts that disappear in a simple purchase of the supermarket.
According to industry sources, by delivering so much small change, the machines lock and empty more often, remaining "offline" until they receive attention. Also, since the devices do not give more than 40 bills at a time, people must do 2 or 3 operations to take amounts greater than $ 8,000 and even more than $ 4,000.
The possibility of creating and printing a $ 5,000 bill was also discussed in mid-May, however, during a television interview, Alberto Fernández ruled it out: "We are not going to make a 5,000-peso bill. It was an idea that circulated, but we are not going to do it. "
Before the President's word, it had transpired that the former governor of Mendoza, Rodolfo Gabrielli, today president of Casa de Moneda, was working on that project with the head of the Central Bank. Although the issue depends on the Central in its capacity as monetary authority, it is the Mint that is in charge of printing. It is the one with "the little machine". And two official sources confirmed to Clarín that they plan to move forward with the launch of the ticket, although not in the very short term.
Debt negotiation
Brito also spoke about the ongoing negotiation with Argentina's creditors, was optimistic and described as " very important the offer made by the Ministry of Economy ".
"I'm not saying that we solved the issue with that, but it is a very important step. If we remember how the negotiation with Argentina began, offering 39 cents per dollar and the Blackrock fund asking for 75 cents ... I think that reaching 53 and a half cents is a success for both parties, "he said. "We cannot fail to recognize that it is the maximum that Argentina can pay. Without an agreement with the creditors, we did not go out, " said Jorge Brito.
